Classic Curry with Potato and Cauliflower

Before I ever met my husband, I made one Indian dish: “curry”. Even when I knew nothing about Indian cooking, I knew that all the heavy cream based dishes I got at Indian restaurants could not be the real cuisine of India. I wanted all the spices, fragrance, and creaminess of the curry from my favorite local Indian place, but without the stomach ache and calories. So, I began to try my hand at my own curry sauce. My basic curry recipe I made pre-Rajat was pretty close to an “authentic” Indian method (as far as I can tell at this point), but it definitely needed some tweaking. Bhindi Masala Curry (Okra Curry)

Bhindi Masala Curry (Okra Curry)

This recipe came from Dassana Amit at Veg Recipes of India. The more Indian food I cook, the more I realize how awesome Amit’s blog is. Her recipes are often identical to how my mother-in-law makes things, and she gives really clear photos for every step. I can’t say enough good things about her Indian recipes! Plus, it’s in English! My husband loves bhindi (okra) and I love any meal that has a sauce with it. So this was a pretty good match for both of us. I will definitely be making this again. Continue reading

My cousin who lives in the area was also able to make it. It was so much fun to have both sides of the family together. Sometimes culture and geography and language can make the two sides of my family seem so distant, but when we were all in my small apartment together, I was reminded of how much we all have in common and how much we all can learn from one another. Standing in my kitchen watching both of my moms eat the food I had prepared and laughing a little too loud with my sisters, I felt truly blessed. Continue reading
